NYC Council Member Farias Backs Good Food NY Bill, Pushes for Quality, Equitable Public Food System

New York City Council Member Amanda Farias has thrown her support behind the Good Food NY Bill, joining advocates and lawmakers in Albany to promote reforms aimed at improving the quality, accountability, and sustainability of food served in public institutions.
Farias said the proposed legislation seeks to modernize public food procurement across New York by shifting the focus from simply selecting the lowest-cost options to prioritising nutrition, worker welfare, sustainability, and equity.

Speaking after the advocacy engagement, she highlighted the importance of ensuring that the millions who depend on public food programmes receive meals that reflect dignity and responsible governance.
“Yesterday in Albany, I joined advocates from across NYS/C to support the Good Food NY Bill, which modernizes public food procurement to prioritize quality, accountability, nutrition, worker well-being, sustainability, and equity — not just lowest cost,” Farias said.
She stressed that public institutions serve an enormous number of meals annually, making it necessary for food policies to reflect public health and ethical standards.
“Public institutions serve hundreds of millions of meals each year, and those who rely on them deserve food that upholds dignity and public responsibility. I’m ready to continue the fight both across our state, and our city to get this done,” she added.
Farias also expressed pride in collaborating with advocacy groups and state leaders to push for reforms that would strengthen food systems across New York.
“Proud to stand with Community Food Advocates, NYS, Senator Michelle Hinchey, Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, and partners statewide to advance a more just and sustainable food system,” she said.
