Annika Sorenstam named 75th U.S. Women’s Open ambassador

The United States Golf Association has named Annika Sorenstam as the ambassador in its build up to the 75th U.S. Women’s Open.

Sorenstam, a three-time winner of the championship in 1995, 1996 and again in 2006, would be presiding over the event.

The championship which holds from December 10 to 13 was earlier scheduled to be played on June 3rd this week. It will still be played at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas.

Speaking about the championship Sorenstam said, “The championship means a lot to me and my career, and I look forward to celebrating and reliving moments that have meant so much not only to me, but the sport of golf as a whole.”

“It’s truly a special occasion for so many of us,” she added.

The championship moments are celebrated in an immersive timeline with images, video clips as well as tales on the USGA’s web site.

Mike Davis, the USGA Chief Executive Officer while speaking about the occasion said, “The U.S. Women’s Open has played a significant role in the advancement of the women’s game for the last 75 years.”

He also took a moment to appreciate to players, staff, fans and others for their roles in making the occasion a remarkable one.

“As we reach this monumental occasion, we want to thank and honor everyone who has been involved in the championship from the start – from the fans, volunteers and staff to the champions and players themselves, by reliving memorable moments and celebrating in Houston this December,” he said.
