Gambia defeats Gabon, tops AFCON Group D qualifiers

The Gambian Football team, the Scorpion, has defeated Gabon’s Football team, the Panthers, in the African Cup of Nations qualifying fixture held at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

In the game held on Monday 16th November 2020, a 2-1 victory against the Panthers, saw the Scorpion top the standing in the Group D Qualifiers of AFCON.

While expressing his elation over the victory, the Gambian President, Adama Barrow, congratulated the nation’s football team on its success.

Commending the team’s performance and commitment, the President said,
“The players have demonstrated a spirit of delivering for the Gambia having emerged on top of their group with 7 points.”

The Scorpion’s chance to top the table came in the second half of the game as Modou Barrow scored the first goal 49 minutes into the game while the second goal came from Musa Barrow.

The team had 44 percent of ball possession as against Gabon’s 56 percent. It also had a total of 4 shots on targets compared to Gabon’s 2.

With its victory, the Scorpion has qualified to play in the 2022 African Cup of Nation (AFCON) which would be held in Cameroon.

The president, as part of his congratulatory message, has assured the team of his full support as it gears up for the AFCON 2022.
