Mayor de Blasio highlights reforms in NYPD
New York Mayor de Blasio has highlighted some major reforms in the State’s police department.
While disclosing this via his Facebook page on Friday January 15, 2021, de Blasio stated that for years, New York City has achieved major police department reforms while keeping our city safe.
“Today we’re announcing another major step forward for 2021 and releasing major discipline reforms,” he said.
He added, “This latest reform will give the NYPD — and the city they are sworn to protect and serve — clear, fair and just discipline guidelines, with strong penalties for misconduct. Our goals are about ensuring accountability and building trust between police and community.”
He said the new discipline guidelines were a major part of the plan to fulfill the Obama Foundation pledge to reimagine policing.
“They called on cities to engage with the community and advocates to draft reforms. We’re proud to answer their call with today’s announcement,” the Mayor said.
“Accountability, transparency and consistency were our guiding stars while developing this disciplinary system. If misconduct occurs, you can look right at the paper and find the right penalty for hundreds of different scenarios,” de Blasio stated.
“Today isn’t the beginning of our work to reform policing, nor is it the end. What we have are clear building blocks for strengthening the bonds between police and the community,” he added.
