Rev Diaz, Eric Adams join New Yorkers to name street after Joe Torres
Councilman Rev. Ruben Diaz and Eric Adams have joined New Yorkers to name the corner of Thieriot and Westchester Ave “Joe Torres Way”.
The street naming ceremony, which was held at Thieriot and Westchester Avenue Bronx, NY, on Saturday June 26, 2021, was aimed at honoring Joe Torres, who died of Covid-19 in March 2020.
According to Diaz, the street renaming ceremony was to pay tribute to Joe Torres and celebrate his life.
“Elected officials, community leaders, friends of Joe, and anyone else attended the ceremony to remember Joe Torres,” the councilman said.
While appreciating councilman Diaz, Sheikh Musa, a New Yorker and rights activist, said, “Today, Corner of Westchester and Theriot Avenues will become Joe Torres Way. Thanks to Councilman Rev. Ruben Diaz Sr.”
He added, “Joe died last March from the COVID-19. Joe’s Restaurant was the premier destination for elected officials and celebrities of Puerto Rican background. Joe was so generous when we launched the annual National Public Safety Honor Day five years ago, he immediately pledged to feed all officers of 43rd Precinct on the honor day every year.
“When News12 contacted me to do a story of a prominent place or person in Parkchester community, I took them to Joe’s Place. Joe was an icon and role model in the Bronx. He was so much loved by the Bronxites that his legacy will live on. Thank you Mr. Torres and enjoy paradise until we meet you there.”
Joe was a Puerto Rican owner of Restaurant Joe’s Place,
Joe’s Place was recognized as the most “Criollo” Restaurant in the Puerto Rican and Latino community where elected officials and artists met.
The restaurant was where the highest political and artistic officials arrived in New York met to share with him.
