Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev met with U.S. Under Secretary of State John Bass on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The high-level talks, held on September 26, focused on a wide range of bilateral issues, with both officials affirming their countries’ commitment to continued collaboration.

Kulubaev emphasized the importance of U.S. support in enhancing Kyrgyzstan’s political landscape, stating the nation’s need for cooperation in “strengthening political institutions, freedom of speech, and human rights.” He also underscored the C5+1 format—a key diplomatic platform involving Central Asian states and the U.S.—as vital to fostering regional stability and cooperation.

Economic cooperation emerged as a central topic during the discussion, with Kyrgyzstan making a strong appeal for increased American investment. Kulubaev highlighted opportunities in critical sectors such as renewable energy, the green and creative economy, and IT. These areas, he said, are pivotal for Kyrgyzstan’s future growth and would benefit immensely from U.S. involvement.

The meeting also reflected on the success of recent bilateral consultations, held in Washington in 2023 and in Bishkek in April 2024, with both parties expressing a shared desire to maintain momentum in resolving key issues.

Notably, Kyrgyzstan is seeking broader international influence by pursuing a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 term. Kulubaev took the opportunity to ask for U.S. backing in this endeavor, positioning it as a crucial step in Kyrgyzstan’s growing role on the global stage.

In a gesture of mutual respect, Kulubaev thanked the U.S. for its efforts in repatriating Kyrgyz citizens from Syria and for providing humanitarian aid to Kyrgyz defense establishments. He also extended an invitation for U.S. participation in the upcoming Global Mountain Summit “Bishkek+25” in 2027, which will focus on the development of mountain regions and assess the results of a five-year action plan.

As both nations look ahead, this meeting reinforces Kyrgyzstan’s strategic vision of forging stronger partnerships with the U.S. while enhancing its influence in regional and international affairs.
