A Royal New Zealand Navy vessel, the HMNZS Manawanui, has run aground near the southern coast of Upolu, Samoa, while conducting a routine reef survey, according to reports from The New Zealand Herald.

The dive and survey vessel, carrying 78 crew members, was involved in the operation when it unexpectedly struck a reef. All personnel aboard have been safely evacuated into life rafts and accounted for, authorities confirmed. A Royal New Zealand Air Force P-8 Poseidon surveillance plane has been deployed to assist in the ongoing rescue efforts.

Maritime Component Commander Commodore Shane Arndell stated, “We are grateful that all crew members are safe and accounted for. We are now focused on ensuring their swift recovery and assessing the extent of the damage to the vessel.”

The HMNZS Manawanui is a key asset in the Royal New Zealand Navy’s survey and underwater operations. While the cause of the incident remains under investigation, early reports suggest challenging conditions in the area may have contributed to the grounding.

The New Zealand Defence Force has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but the situation is being closely monitored as recovery efforts continue.
