At the Gracie Mansion Conservancy Annual Gala, New York City Mayor Eric Adams presented the Key to the City to Darren Walker, Marc Morial, and Michelle Miller, honoring their transformative contributions to social justice, philanthropy, and human rights.

“Our city is a home for all New Yorkers, and tonight’s honorees have transformed this city with their vision and advocacy, defining what Black excellence means for a new generation,” said Mayor Adams.

Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, called the recognition a tribute to the resilience and dreams of New Yorkers: “I have the privilege to call this world-class city home… But most importantly, I have the privilege to work in support of the New Yorkers who will always be the crown jewel of this city.”

Marc Morial, CEO of the National Urban League, emphasized the collective effort behind his work: “This key is a reminder that our collective work to deliver for New Yorkers is never finished. When we come together, we can unlock the doors to a better, more equitable future for all.”

Michelle Miller, co-host of CBS Saturday Morning, reflected on the honor as part of a larger legacy: “I am humbled… standing on the shoulders of the generations of journalists, philanthropists, and public servants who continue to contribute to our great city.”

The honorees’ legacies include Walker’s groundbreaking leadership at the Ford Foundation, Morial’s advocacy for economic equality, and Miller’s award-winning journalism and community service.

The tradition of awarding the Key to the City dates back to 1702, symbolizing the city’s gratitude and recognition of extraordinary contributions.
