Mayor Eric Adams announced today the appointment of James Stratford as the new executive director of the New York City Young Men’s Initiative (YMI), bringing over 20 years of nonprofit and youth development experience to the role.
Stratford, a Bronx native and former participant in city-led programs like the Summer Youth Employment Program, will lead YMI in addressing disparities faced by young men of color in education, employment, health, and justice. His lived experience and extensive career in nonprofits position him to drive impactful change in the city’s largest public-private initiative of its kind.
“In our administration, we are led by New Yorkers who bring their full lived experience to move their agencies and offices forward, use their personal story to create better policies, and, ultimately, build a stronger city — and James Stratford is no exception,” said Mayor Adams. “A product of city agencies and youth development nonprofits, James’ own personal journey will inform and shape his leadership as the next executive director of the Young Men’s Initiative.”
Chief Equity Officer and MOERJ Commissioner Sideya Sherman praised Stratford’s dedication: “James has a strong track record of championing underserved communities and leveraging his lived experience and exceptional leadership skills to drive meaningful change. His dedication to helping young people overcome obstacles and realize their full potential is truly inspiring.”
Stratford expressed gratitude and determination as he steps into the role. “Growing up in the Bronx, I experienced firsthand the transformative power of opportunity, mentorship, and support. As the new executive director of the Young Men’s Initiative, I am honored to lead this critical work and build on a legacy that has impacted so many lives across our city. Together, we will work tirelessly to ensure youth, especially young men of color, have access to the resources, opportunities, and encouragement they need to succeed.”
YMI, launched in 2011, invests nearly $30 million annually to empower young men of color across New York City. Under Stratford’s leadership, the initiative will continue to develop programs and policies aimed at creating pathways to success for young men aged 14 to 26.
Stratford’s extensive resume includes leadership roles at FAN4Kids, A Second Chance Inc., and Phipps Neighborhoods, where he oversaw youth services and strategic initiatives. He is also a 2024 Coro Leadership New York Fellow and a 2023 American Express Global Leadership Academy Fellow. Stratford holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Elizabeth City State University and an Executive Master of Public Administration from NYU Wagner.
Elected officials and colleagues expressed confidence in Stratford’s leadership. “Someone dedicated to justice and equality, James Stratford will bring to the job over two decades of experience in nonprofits and youth empowerment,” said New York State Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar. “Under his leadership, YMI will continue its outstanding work to uplift young men of color through mentoring, education, career programs, and life coaching.”
Primo Lasana, Executive Director of Reading Partners and a former NYU Wagner cohort member, commended Stratford’s leadership abilities. “James is a brilliant strategist and a collaborative teammate who always brings out the best in those around him. New York City couldn’t ask for a better advocate and leader.”
Other leaders in the nonprofit and community development sectors echoed these sentiments. Garrett Lucien of the Coro New York Leadership Center called Stratford a leader who “inspires action” and “ensures sustainable outcomes.” Robert Oliver, CEO of FAN4Kids, described Stratford as “a trailblazer who will undoubtedly inspire and empower young men of color across New York City.”
Stratford will report to Sideya Sherman as he takes the helm of YMI, alongside the recently launched NYC Her Future initiative. Together, these offices form the cornerstone of the city’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion for all youth.
“The New York City Young Men’s Initiative is gaining not just a leader, but a trailblazer,” said Andre White, CEO of Phipps Neighborhoods. “James Stratford’s passion, vision, and strategic mindset will ensure its continued success and growth.”
