Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has undergone successful hip replacement surgery at a US military base in Germany following a fall in Luxembourg.
Pelosi, 84, was hospitalized on Friday after the fall, which occurred during her visit to Luxembourg for the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. The surgery was performed at Landstuhl Army Base, where Pelosi is now recovering.
“Earlier this morning, Speaker Emerita Pelosi underwent a successful hip replacement and is well on the mend,” Ian Krager, a spokesperson for Pelosi, said in a statement. “Speaker Pelosi is grateful to US military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre at Landstuhl Army Base and medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg for their excellent care and kindness.”
Pelosi’s office did not immediately disclose the full details of the incident but confirmed she had suffered a “hard fall” while descending marble stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace, the official residence of Luxembourg’s Grand Duke. Although the injury’s severity was not initially clarified, the fall resulted in the need for hip surgery.
The fall came just days after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, also suffered an injury. McConnell fell during a closed-door Republican lunch on Tuesday, sustaining a wrist sprain and a minor facial cut. Pelosi’s injury marks the second fall of the week involving a senior member of Congress.
Pelosi, who was re-elected to her 20th term in November, is known for being the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, holding the position from 2007 to 2011 before reclaiming it in 2019. She stepped down as the Democratic leader in November 2022. Pelosi’s office has expressed gratitude for the swift medical care she received as she recovers from the fall.
