Trump begins second term, promises 'golden age' for America

Donald Trump was inaugurated for a historic second term as president on Monday, delivering a bold vision for the nation’s future during a ceremony held in the Capitol Rotunda—the first indoor inauguration since Ronald Reagan’s in 1985.

“The golden age of America begins right now,” Trump proclaimed, emphasizing a new era of strength, unity, and national pride. “We will be a nation like no other, full of compassion, courage, and exceptionalism. From this day on, the United States of America will be a free, sovereign, and independent nation.”

Trump described his electoral victory as a mandate to reverse a “horrible betrayal” and to restore faith, democracy, and prosperity. Reflecting on a July assassination attempt in which he was injured, he said, “I was saved by God to make America great again.”

His address previewed sweeping policy changes, including reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, conducting nationwide immigration raids, and deploying U.S. troops to secure the southern border. He also vowed to designate violent cartels, like Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, as foreign terrorist organizations and use the Alien Enemies Act to expel known cartel associates.

On energy policy, Trump announced plans to declare a national emergency to expand fossil fuel production, declaring, “We will drill, baby, drill,” promising economic prosperity through increased oil production.

Addressing social issues, Trump stated his administration would recognize only two genders and implement harsher penalties for violent crimes, including the death penalty for undocumented migrants and those convicted of killing law enforcement officers.

Trump emphasized a foreign policy focused on peace and avoiding wars, calling his legacy one of a “peacemaker and unifier,” referencing a recent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.

In a rare moment of bipartisan support, former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris applauded Trump’s remarks, despite his criticism of their administration.

Concluding his address, Trump issued a call to action: “We will not be conquered, we will not be intimidated, we will not be broken, and we will not fail,” heralding what he described as a new golden age for the United States.
