New York City, September 27, 2025 — The African Immigrants’ Commission of New York and Connecticut reaffirmed its commitment to empowerment, cultural preservation, and community advancement during its 6th Annual African Heritage Month Celebration. The event, themed “Knowledge is Power,” not only honored the continent’s rich traditions but also marked a new chapter in the Commission’s mission to address critical social and health issues affecting African immigrants in the region.

Held on Saturday, September 27, the celebration brought together a cross-section of community leaders, health professionals, educators, and cultural performers. The gathering underscored how the Commission has evolved over seven years from a small advocacy group into a leading community-based organization bridging resources between African immigrants and mainstream institutions.

“Our mission has always been to uplift our community through knowledge, advocacy, and culture,” said Mory Kouyate, Chairman of the Commission, in an interview with New York Parrot. “This year’s celebration demonstrates that we are not just preserving heritage — we are empowering people with the tools to build healthier, stronger, and more self-reliant communities.”

In keeping with the year’s theme, the event focused heavily on education and public health awareness. Partnerships with major institutions such as Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, MetroPlus Health, and the African Law Enforcement Organization/NYPD provided attendees with access to vital resources — from free cancer screenings and HIV testing to law enforcement recruitment and wellness education.

“The collaboration with healthcare providers and civic partners is a major milestone,” Kouyate explained. “It shows that the African community is not isolated — we are active contributors to the broader public health and civic landscape of New York.”

Beyond health initiatives, the event celebrated the vibrancy of African arts and culture through live performances, traditional drumming, and dance. The aroma of West African cuisine filled the air as attendees connected over shared heritage and common aspirations. “The energy was incredible,” said one attendee. “It felt like a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come as a community.”

Kouyate emphasized that the Heritage Month celebration remains an entirely community-driven effort, organized by everyday residents rather than elected officials. “This is a testament to the power of grassroots leadership,” he said. “We encourage our people to take ownership of their stories, their celebrations, and their collective progress.”

The Commission also took the opportunity to recognize outstanding individuals from various backgrounds who have made significant contributions to the African diaspora in New York and Connecticut. “We celebrate people who work tirelessly — regardless of race or background — to uplift our community,” Kouyate noted.

Reflecting on the organization’s seven-year journey, Kouyate said the African Immigrants’ Commission is entering a new era of growth and impact. “We’ve become a bridge — connecting institutions to our people, and our people to opportunities,” he said. “Our goal is not only to preserve culture but to make sure our community thrives in every aspect of life — health, education, business, and leadership.”

Looking ahead, the Commission plans to expand its outreach and strengthen collaborations across both states. Discussions are already underway to adjust the event’s timing to increase participation and avoid overlapping with the United Nations General Assembly, which often occurs around the same period.

As the night closed with music, dance, and camaraderie, one message resonated clearly — the African Immigrants’ Commission remains steadfast in its mission to empower, educate, and elevate. Through knowledge and unity, it continues to build a legacy of strength and pride for generations to come.
