Senegalese Diaspora in New York Presents Concerns to President Faye

On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye met with members of the Senegalese community in New York during a gathering held at 109 W 39th Street.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the diaspora to raise pressing concerns and present proposals aimed at strengthening ties between Senegal and its citizens abroad.
Speaking on behalf of the Senegalese American Association and the federation of Senegalese associations in New York, the group’s president, Momodou Drame, highlighted two critical issues: the repatriation of bodies and the return and investment of emigrants.
Repatriation of Deceased Compatriots
Drame described the repatriation of deceased Senegalese as a heavy financial and emotional burden for families. He urged the government to create a national solidarity fund accessible to all families, regardless of status, and to strengthen the capacity of the Consulate General of Senegal in New York to simplify procedures and reduce costs related to funeral transport.
“Such an arrangement would bring comfort and dignity to our families, while strengthening the link of trust between the diaspora and the Nation,” Drame said.
Return and Investment of the Diaspora
On the matter of reintegration, Drame stressed that the diaspora is a major economic force. He called for policies that would ease voluntary return, including tax and customs incentives for investments in agriculture, renewable energy, and technological start-ups.
He also proposed the creation of a special diaspora one-stop shop to streamline administrative processes, and the development of agricultural and industrial zones through partnerships between the state, local governments, and diaspora organizations.
Recognition of the Diaspora’s Contributions
Drame praised Senegalese emigrants in the United States, describing them as hardworking, resilient, and dedicated to both their families and the image of Senegal. He emphasized that their courage and sense of solidarity are valuable assets for national development.
Concluding his address, Drame commended President Faye for his choice of diplomats serving the community, notably Minister Cheikh Niang and Consul General Demba Camara, whom he described as “tenors of Senegalese diplomacy” close to their people.
The meeting underscored the Senegalese government’s proximity policy and the diaspora’s determination to contribute to a stronger, more prosperous Senegal.
