Former Kenyan Prime Minister and one of Africa’s most enduring political figures, Raila Odinga, has died at the age of 80. He passed away on Wednesday while receiving medical treatment in India.

Odinga’s death marks the end of an era in Kenyan politics, where he stood for decades as the face of opposition and reform. Speculation about his health had intensified in recent weeks, though his family and close allies had dismissed reports of any critical condition.

A master political strategist and an unwavering democrat, Odinga contested the Kenyan presidency five times but never ascended to the top seat, often alleging electoral irregularities. His influence, however, extended far beyond the ballot box—shaping national debates, inspiring reform movements, and helping to steer Kenya’s transition through turbulent political times.

Background

Born on January 7, 1945, in Maseno, western Kenya, Raila Amolo Odinga was the son of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first vice president and a prominent independence leader. Educated in East Germany, he trained as an engineer before venturing into politics in the late 1970s.

Odinga rose to prominence as a fierce advocate for multi-party democracy during the one-party era of President Daniel arap Moi. He was detained multiple times for his political activism but remained steadfast in his quest for justice and democratic governance.

He served as Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013 under a power-sharing deal following the disputed 2007 presidential election. His legacy is defined by his resilience, advocacy for constitutional reform, and dedication to national unity.

Often called “Baba” (father) by his supporters, Odinga’s name became synonymous with Kenya’s long struggle for democracy, good governance, and inclusivity.
