A major milestone has been recorded in the African media community in the United States with the official formation and election of executives for the Senegalese Press Association of America (SPAA).

The historic event took place yesterday in Harlem, New York, bringing together Senegalese journalists and media professionals from across the U.S.

The creation of SPAA follows two years of deliberations and consultations among Senegalese media practitioners in the diaspora.

The association aims to unite Senegalese journalists and others reporting on Senegal’s affairs abroad under one professional body, fostering collaboration, ethical reporting, and mutual support.

According to organizers, the association’s headquarters will be based in New York City, though its members are spread across various states in the U.S. The election was officiated by Hon. Dame Babou, a pioneer of the Senegalese media in the United States, who commended the unity and commitment demonstrated by participants throughout the formation process.

The newly elected executive officers are:

Mr. Samba Gueye – President

Mr. Mor Kane – Secretary General

Mr. Mamadou Sene – Treasurer

Observers described the formation of the SPAA as a “significant step forward” for African media representation in the diaspora, noting that it would strengthen the voice of Senegalese journalists and enhance coverage of issues affecting Senegal and its citizens abroad.

Members and supporters have since extended their congratulations to the new executives and the wider Senegalese community for achieving this long-anticipated milestone.
