AU Calls for Urgent Global Intervention as Mali’s Security Crisis Deepens

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has issued an urgent call for coordinated international action as Mali’s worsening security and humanitarian situation reaches a critical stage.
In a statement released on Sunday, Youssouf condemned the escalating terrorist blockades that have severed vital supply routes to civilian populations, leaving entire communities on the brink of starvation and despair.

The AU Chairperson expressed solidarity with the Malian government and its citizens, particularly the families of recent victims, reaffirming the Union’s unwavering commitment to peace, security, and development across the Sahel region.
Youssouf also voiced deep concern over the recent abduction of three Egyptian nationals, describing such acts as “heinous crimes” that highlight the urgent need for collective global action.
He urged enhanced intelligence sharing, sustained support for affected nations, and stronger unified measures against terrorism and violent extremism — in line with the AU Peace and Security Council’s Communiqué from its 1304th ministerial meeting held on 30 September 2025.
The appeal follows renewed reports of intensified jihadist attacks in northern and central Mali, where armed groups have imposed sieges on towns, triggering mass displacement and severe food shortages.
