The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has condemned the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Kebbi and Niger States, describing the incident as “a despicable act committed against children and innocent people.”

In a statement issued from Addis Ababa, the AU Commission said the Chairperson is deeply concerned about the growing threat of terrorism, violent extremism and banditry in Nigeria. He urged the activation of accountability mechanisms to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and “swiftly brought to justice in accordance with existing national, continental and global legal frameworks.”

Youssouf warned that children across Africa continue to face six grave violations — including abduction, killing, maiming and recruitment by armed groups — noting that the kidnapping of minors remains “a deeply troubling and abhorrent trend in Africa.” He said the AU is working with member states, regional bodies, partners and civil society to strengthen child protection systems.

The Commission also called for coordinated efforts to secure the immediate release of the abducted students and all other victims, stressing the need to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

Reaffirming solidarity with Nigeria, the AU expressed support for the government and people of the country “during this difficult time.”
