Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick-Lowe, has announced significant gains in the city’s long-standing partnership with Nanning, China, following a high-level engagement with her counterpart, Mayor Hou Gang.

In a detailed statement, Mayor Malick-Lowe described the meeting as “a historic moment for the cities of Banjul and Nanning,” recalling the origins of the sister-city relationship established in 1987—an initiative begun during her father’s tenure as Mayor. She noted that Mayor Hou Gang “took us through a journey of decades,” highlighting the deep ties between the two cities.

During the ceremony, Nanning officially handed over three custom-designed waste management trucks to the Banjul City Council. According to the Mayor, the trucks were tailored to meet the city’s unique infrastructure needs. “The sleeker, smaller, technologically responsive versions of these modern trucks are best suited for our city with its smaller roads and sharp intersections. We are proud of this milestone,” she said.

The partnership also delivered 230 modern solar street lights, with 30 designated for a vulnerable community dubbed “Little Nanning.” Mayor Malick-Lowe said the initiative aligns with her broader Safe City agenda. “This lighting project fulfills a portion of my desires to further develop a city which is safe for all its people, especially our women and girls,” she noted.

She added that the newly signed cooperation agreement underscores Nanning’s commitment to supporting her legacy goals as President of REFELA, while strengthening Banjul’s dedication to the bilateral friendship. Additional projects are expected to be unveiled as discussions progress.

Mayor Malick-Lowe commended her team—including councillors Abdoulie Gaye, Fallou Gallas Ceesay, and Mamud Ceesay—as well as Consultant Latirr Carr, who continues to interface with Nanning on the Safe City project.

Expressing gratitude for diplomatic support, she thanked Chinese Ambassador Liu Jin for facilitating the partnership. “Long live our respective peoples! Long live our continued friendship and partnership,” she concluded.
