AU Expresses Grave Concern Over Developments in Venezuela, Calls for Dialogue and Restraint

The African Union (AU) has expressed deep concern over the worsening situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, citing reports of the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and military attacks on state institutions.
In a communiqué issued on the situation, the AU reaffirmed its commitment to the core principles of international law, particularly the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, as well as the right of peoples to self-determination as provided for in the United Nations Charter.
“The African Union is following with grave concern the recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including reports of the abduction of the President of the Republic, Mr. Nicolás Maduro, and military attacks on Venezuelan institutions,” the communiqué stated.
The continental body stressed that lasting solutions to Venezuela’s internal challenges can only be achieved through peaceful and inclusive political dialogue led by Venezuelans themselves, rather than external interference.
“The African Union underscores the importance of dialogue, peaceful settlement of disputes, and respect for constitutional and institutional frameworks,” it said, adding that such efforts must be carried out “in a spirit of good neighbourliness, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence among nations.”
The AU further expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people, reiterating its commitment to peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations and regions.
“The complex internal challenges facing Venezuela can only be sustainably addressed through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves,” the Union emphasised.
Calling for calm, the African Union urged all parties involved to act responsibly to prevent further escalation and safeguard regional stability.
“The African Union calls upon all parties concerned to exercise restraint, responsibility, and respect for international law to prevent any escalation and to preserve regional peace and stability,” the communiqué concluded.
