New York City officially opened applications for its 3-K and Pre-K programs on Tuesday, as Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York City Public Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels marked the launch with a visit to a child care center in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn. The application period runs through February 27, 2026, and families with children turning three or four this year are encouraged to apply.
City officials said the rollout marks a major early-education priority for the new administration, aimed at expanding access and ensuring families across the five boroughs are aware of available options. Parents and guardians can submit applications online through myschools.nyc, by calling 718-935-2009, or by visiting one of the city’s 13 Family Welcome Centers for in-person assistance.
To broaden outreach, Mayor Mamdani released a video urging families to apply, signaling the start of a citywide information campaign. The video will air on TaxiTV and LinkNYC, part of what the administration described as an aggressive effort to meet families where they are and remove barriers to enrollment.
“New Yorkers have until February 27 to apply for 3-K and Pre-K, and we’re using every tool at our disposal to get the word out,” Mamdani said. “Whether on TaxiTV, LinkNYC, or out in your neighborhood, my administration will be working tirelessly to ensure that New Yorkers know their government is here to serve them.”
Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels echoed the focus on equity and access, emphasizing that early childhood education plays a critical role in long-term success. “Every child, regardless of background or circumstance, deserves access to a high-quality early childhood education,” Samuels said, adding that the city is working to strengthen continuity of care for families.
City officials stressed that applications are not processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Any family that applies by the February 27 deadline will receive an offer, easing concerns for parents who may need additional time or support to complete the process. Applications are available online in 13 languages, with interpretation services offered in more than 200 languages by phone or at Family Welcome Centers.
The application launch follows a recent announcement by Mayor Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul unveiling “2-Care,” a new initiative designed to expand child care options citywide. The program’s first year will focus on high-need areas, with plans to serve all interested families by its fourth year. The mayor has also pledged to work with the state to strengthen the city’s existing 3-K program and fulfill its promise of universal access.
New York City Public Schools, the nation’s largest public school system, serves approximately one million students across more than 1,600 schools. City leaders said the latest application cycle underscores their commitment to early education as a foundation for equity, affordability, and long-term opportunity for working families.
