Governor Abbott extends statewide disaster declaration for coronavirus in Texas
Texas Governor, Greg Abbott, on Saturday August 8, 2020, extended a statewide disaster declaration issued in March in response to the coronavirus pandemic in Texas.
The governor said the renewal of the Disaster Declaration was aimed at providing communities with the resources they require to fight COVID-19.
“I urge Texans to remain vigilant in our fight against this virus. Everyone must do their part to slow the spread of COVID-19 by wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, and washing your hands frequently and thoroughly,” Abbott said a statement.
On Friday August 7, 2020, health officials in the state reported a total of 474,524 cases out of which at least 8.096 were pronounced dead.
However, studies show that Texas has recorded higher number of cases than what is being reported because many people have not been tested, as some people can be infected and not feel sick.
Many people who contract the virus exhibit mild or moderate symptoms including fever and cough that clear in a couple of weeks.
After coronavirus infection, older adults and people with underlying health challenges experience severe illness, such as pnuemonia and deaths though a large number of people get cured from it.
