Trump promises snapback sanctions on Iran after defeat at UN
United States President Trump has moved for a ‘snapback’ of international sanctions against Iran, following a motion to extend a United Nations arms embargo on Iran was rejected on Friday August 14, 2020.
Trump said on Saturday August 15, 2020, that the US will be doing a snapback next week, after suffering a ‘humiliating defeat’ at the United Nations security Council on Friday.
It is unlikely that he would attend an emergency summit of world leaders, called by Russian President Vladimir Putin, to avoid ‘confrontation’ after the threat, according to him.
China and Russia were among the member states, which opposed extending the arms embargo due to expire in October, 2020.
The votes count at the UN showed eleven member states abstained, including Britain, France and Germany, while the Dominican Republic and the US were the only members in support of the ban.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said during a televised speech on Saturday, 15 August, 2020, that he could not remember a previous time when the United States planned for months to strike a blow at the Islamic Republic of Iran, and it garnered only one vote.
“But the great success was that the United States was defeated in this conspiracy with humiliation,” Rouhani said.
Mr Trump plans to trigger a clause in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action signed between Iran and other nations.
However, the United States withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018.
Under the terms of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the conventional weapons ban on Iran is legally set to expire in mid-October.
For months, the Trump administration has sought to extend the embargo despite having exited the deal – a campaign that was predicted to fail.
