Former US first lady Melania Trump revealed the passing of her mother, Amalija Knavs, at the age of 78. Melania expressed her deep sorrow in a post on X, the former Twitter platform, stating, “It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother.”

Amalija Knavs, known for her strength and grace, immigrated to the United States from Slovenia with her husband Victor Knavs. The couple, after a lengthy immigration process, officially became US citizens in 2018 during Donald Trump’s presidency. Melania paid tribute to her mother, acknowledging her as a woman who consistently exuded grace, warmth, and dignity. Melania emphasized the profound impact of Knavs’ legacy and expressed the family’s enduring love.

Melania Trump’s parents navigated the immigration system, ultimately obtaining citizenship through their daughter’s sponsorship, utilizing the family reunification visa process. This process, previously criticized by Donald Trump as “chain migration,” became a means for Melania’s parents to secure their place as US citizens.

In a noteworthy historical context, Melania Trump, born outside the United States, became the first presidential wife in over a century to hold such a distinction. This fact stands in contrast to Donald Trump’s earlier stance on immigration, where he advocated for strict restrictions and emphasized initiatives such as building a wall on the southern border with Mexico.

Amalija Knavs’ cause of death has not been disclosed. Her life in Slovenia included employment at the local textile factory Jutranjka, where she introduced a young Melania to the fashion world by encouraging her to model for the company in the mid-1970s. Viktor Knavs, her husband, was an entrepreneur.

Donald Trump conveyed his condolences on his Truth Social media platform, characterizing it as “a very sad night” for the Trump family. He praised Amalija as an “incredible woman” who would be dearly missed, marking a poignant moment for both the Trumps and their extended circle.
