France’s newly appointed Foreign Minister, Stephane Sejourne, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Saturday during his first official visit abroad. Sejourne assured President Zelensky that France remains steadfast in its commitment to support Ukraine, emphasizing that despite the escalating crises, Ukraine will continue to be a top priority for France.

The visit followed the announcement by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of a fresh military assistance package for Kyiv, raising expectations for similar aid from Brussels and Washington. During a joint news conference with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Minister Sejourne reiterated France’s unwavering dedication to Ukraine, emphasizing that it remains a priority amid mounting challenges.

In a meeting lasting approximately an hour, Minister Sejourne engaged in talks with President Zelensky, addressing crucial defense needs and exploring potential collaboration on joint production of drones, artillery, and the reinforcement of air defense capabilities. President Zelensky expressed gratitude for France’s continuous defense support and assistance to the Ukrainian people.

The visit comes at a critical juncture as Ukraine faces renewed attacks from Russia, with Moscow intensifying aerial assaults in recent weeks. Minister Sejourne’s commitment to Ukraine was underscored as he emphasized the significance of making Ukraine his inaugural official visit since assuming office.

As Ukraine grapples with the need for substantial aid, the European Union’s 50-billion-euro aid package remains stalled due to political reasons, prompting concerns about the potential impact on the ongoing conflict. Minister Sejourne pledged France’s support, acknowledging the importance of upholding the fundamental principles of international law and European values in the face of the Ukrainian crisis.

Despite geopolitical challenges and funding uncertainties, France, with military support totaling 3.2 billion euros, remains resolute in its commitment to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The international community watches closely as diplomatic efforts and aid packages are sought to ensure Ukraine’s stability and security in the midst of evolving regional conflicts.
