France suspends subsidised electric car scheme after surge
France has announced the suspension of a program offering subsidized electric cars for lease at just 100 euros ($109) per month, after experiencing a significant increase in demand that surpassed initial expectations.
Launched by President Emmanuel Macron’s administration in December 2023, the initiative aimed to make electric vehicles more accessible to low-income households while advancing environmental objectives by reducing carbon emissions.
Initially slated to subsidize up to 25,000 European-built electric vehicles for the year 2024, the program saw demand soar beyond projections, prompting authorities to double the planned number of subsidized vehicles. An advisor to President Macron hailed the program as a notable success, emblematic of France’s commitment to environmental policies that benefit both citizens and the planet.
Under the program, eligible French residents could lease electric cars without a deposit for a three-year period, with the option to renew the subscription once. Each car was supported by a subsidy of up to 13,000 euros, further incentivizing participation. However, applicants had to meet specific criteria, including income eligibility and the necessity of a car for commuting purposes, particularly for journeys exceeding 15 km (9 miles) from home to work.
Despite its temporary suspension, the French government has indicated intentions to revive the program by the end of 2024 in preparation for the following year. French Industry and Energy Minister Roland Lescure highlighted the program’s dual benefits, emphasizing its role in providing affordable electric vehicles to those with limited financial means while also bolstering the domestic automotive industry by promoting the production of French vehicles.
Lescure underscored the importance of managing both accessibility and domestic production, noting the broader societal and economic implications of such initiatives. The temporary halt reflects the program’s unforeseen popularity and underscores the need for strategic recalibration to ensure its long-term viability and effectiveness in achieving its environmental and social objectives.
