In a keynote address delivered at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Beijing’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, declared China’s unwavering dedication to serving as a “force for stability” on the world stage.

Amidst a gathering of 180 leaders and defense chiefs, Wang Yi emphasized China’s stance as a responsible major country, pledging to uphold the continuity and stability of its key policies amidst global turbulence.

Wang Yi’s remarks come amidst heightened tensions surrounding the conflict in Ukraine, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealing for increased assistance in his nation’s resistance against Russian forces. Despite criticisms directed at China for its reluctance to condemn Russia’s actions, Wang reiterated China’s neutrality in the conflict, emphasizing the normalcy of relations between China and Russia as neighboring major countries.

Addressing the ongoing Ukraine crisis, Wang Yi underscored China’s commitment to constructive engagement, despite faltering efforts to broker a political settlement amid Western apprehensions. Furthermore, Wang reaffirmed China’s position on the Israel-Hamas conflict, advocating for an immediate ceasefire and the facilitation of humanitarian aid into Gaza to alleviate the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

In response to queries regarding alleged human rights violations in Xinjiang, Wang Yi dismissed accusations of cultural erasure and mass incarceration of the Uyghur minority as unfounded rumors propagated by certain international actors. Wang accused these unnamed entities of seeking to sow discord in Xinjiang and hinder China’s development, while maintaining China’s track record as a bastion of peace.

Amidst ongoing scrutiny, Wang Yi’s address at the Munich Security Conference underscores China’s steadfast commitment to stability in a rapidly evolving global landscape. Despite mounting challenges and criticisms, China remains resolute in its pursuit of constructive engagement and diplomatic solutions to regional and international crises, positioning itself as a key player in shaping the future of global security and cooperation.
