Brazil’s law enforcement has suggested that charges be brought against former President Jair Bolsonaro concerning the purported falsification of his Covid vaccination certificate, adding to his array of legal troubles.

The investigation into Bolsonaro’s alleged fabrication of Covid vaccination records commenced last year, amidst his presidency marked by downplaying the seriousness of the pandemic.

According to a 231-page report by the federal police, Bolsonaro and 16 others are suspected of conspiring to issue false certificates to gain improper advantages amidst the pandemic’s turmoil.

The decision to press charges against Bolsonaro now rests with the Attorney General’s office.

Bolsonaro, who once quipped about the vaccine turning people into alligators, has openly admitted to not being vaccinated.

In defense, Bolsonaro’s lawyer Fabio Wajngarten stated on social media that Bolsonaro abstained from vaccination due to personal convictions, disavowing any knowledge of false vaccination certificates being issued.

Police investigations are underway for charges of criminal association and the insertion of false data into the public system, both of which carry potential imprisonment sentences.

Bolsonaro’s legal entanglements extend beyond the alleged falsification of vaccination records, including investigations into a purported coup plot to retain power after losing the 2022 election and the alleged misappropriation of gifts from foreign nations. Additionally, he has been barred from holding public office until 2030 due to his attacks on the election system.
