China and Russia have pledged to bolster strategic cooperation, reaffirming their strong ties amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The commitment came during a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday.

The two nations have increasingly intensified their diplomatic engagement in recent years, with their strategic partnership growing even closer following Russia’s incursion into Ukraine. Lavrov’s visit to China culminated in discussions with President Xi, during which he conveyed Russia’s admiration for China’s achievements under Xi’s leadership.

President Xi, in turn, emphasized China’s significant regard for its relations with Russia and expressed readiness to enhance bilateral communication and multilateral strategic coordination. The leaders agreed to maintain close exchanges to ensure the steady development of their ties.

During his visit, Lavrov also met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, expressing gratitude for China’s support following President Putin’s uncontested re-election. Wang reiterated China’s commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation with Russia, expressing confidence in Russia’s prosperous future under Putin’s leadership.

However, analysts note the power dynamics between the two nations, with China increasingly wielding influence over Russia amid the latter’s international isolation. This relationship, while beneficial for Moscow’s immediate needs, may lead to Russia becoming subservient to China in the long term.

Despite US warnings against aiding Russia indirectly, Lavrov criticized Western sanctions and attempts to restrict China’s access to sensitive technologies. In response, Wang affirmed the nations’ adherence to principles of fairness and justice, advocating for a common future devoid of hegemony and Cold War mentality.

China vowed to continue playing a constructive role on the international stage, advocating for peace and stability while opposing divisive actions. As China and Russia deepen their cooperation, their alignment on global issues could shape the geopolitical landscape for years to come.
