Kyiv adopts mobilisation law as Moscow strikes facilities across country

In response to ongoing Russian aggression, Ukrainian lawmakers passed a significant army mobilisation bill on Thursday, aimed at bolstering the country’s defense capabilities amidst escalating conflict.

The approval of this legislation comes at a critical juncture, as Moscow launched a series of airstrikes targeting energy facilities across multiple regions of Ukraine.

The decision to enact the mobilisation law reflects Kyiv’s determination to address the challenges posed by Russia’s sustained offensive, which has placed considerable strain on Ukraine’s military resources. Despite facing hurdles such as delays in crucial US military aid and shortages of manpower and ammunition, Ukrainian authorities have intensified efforts to fortify their defenses.

The latest Russian aerial assault, conducted at dawn, resulted in casualties and significant damage in several Ukrainian cities, including Mykolaiv and Kharkiv. President Volodymyr Zelensky, during a visit to Lithuania, urged Western allies to provide additional air defense support and called for a united stance against Russian aggression.

The mobilisation law, which was met with opposition from segments of the population fatigued by prolonged conflict, underwent revisions following pressure from military officials. One contentious clause, allowing soldiers serving for over 36 months to return home, was ultimately removed, signaling a commitment to sustaining military readiness.

In the face of relentless attacks on critical infrastructure, including power stations and gas distributors, Ukrainian authorities have mobilised resources to mitigate the impact on civilian populations. Reports indicate extensive damage in various regions, with casualties reported and widespread disruption to essential services.

Despite the resilience demonstrated by Ukrainian forces, the conflict shows no signs of abating, underscoring the urgent need for international support in countering Russian aggression. As the situation continues to evolve, efforts to safeguard Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remain paramount in the face of escalating hostilities.
