Trump criminal case: Jury selection reaches final stage
Jury selection in the historic criminal trial of former President Donald Trump has reached its culmination, signaling the potential commencement of opening statements as early as Monday.
A complete 12-person panel has been sworn in, with efforts underway to secure six alternate jurors to serve as reserves if required. Trump faces allegations of falsifying business records in what marks the inaugural criminal trial of a former U.S. president, vehemently denying the charges.
The process of assembling an impartial jury in New York, where Trump established a prominent business presence, was initially anticipated to span weeks. However, proceedings accelerated after Trump’s legal team exhausted their allotted objections.
“We have our jury,” declared Justice Juan Merchan on Thursday, following the selection of seven men and five women. Two jurors had to be excused earlier due to unforeseen circumstances.
The trial revolves around a hush-money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Daniels received $130,000 before the 2016 election to maintain silence regarding an alleged affair with Trump, an assertion he refutes. While the payment itself wasn’t unlawful, Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records, as alleged by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
Upon departing the courtroom, Trump brandished numerous printed media articles condemning the charges as “political” and lamented the trial’s allegedly unfair nature. He also criticized the courtroom’s temperature as “freezing.”
However, the day’s proceedings encountered initial setbacks, with two panel members dismissed. One juror expressed concerns over impartiality due to external influence, while another was excused over suspicions of misrepresentation regarding prior criminal history.
