A 74-year-old man is dead and a 44-year-old man was injured after police say both men were shot in the back.

Officers responded to a call just before 10 a.m. Friday at Tompkins Square Park at Avenue A and 7th Street. Both men were found shot and taken to Bellevue Hospital, according to the NYPD. The 44-year-old man is in stable condition.

“There is a small number of people who are doing a disproportionate amount of crime and we need to make sure they remain behind bars,” Mayor Eric Adams said on WPIX Friday.

Police said they have not made any arrests and there is no motive at this time.

“It’s a reoccurring thing, unfortunately. It’s not surprising. Once or twice a week, there is some sort of nonsense going on,” Ben Hauck said at the park.

A man was indicted in April in connection with two separate shootings at Tompkins Square Park that occurred in March and seriously injured two people.

“This doesn’t make you feel safe. This is my neighborhood, and I roam the streets quite frequently,” Hannah Akil said.

“It was better for a while,” Nelson Bareto said. “They were making efforts more friendly for children and families at that part of the park, but this corner here particularly gets a lot of crime.”

Some residents said this kind of violence makes them want to move out of this neighborhood.
