Gambia: Sheikh Darboe elected GSIC President

Sheikh Darboe Ustass Essa, a renowned Gambian Islamic scholar and head of Tadamun Islamic Institute, has been elected as the president of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC).

According to an online TV station, Eye Africa, Ustass Darboe, who is elected at the ongoing GSIC congress in Kanifing, will succeed the long term president Alh. Muhammad Lamin Touray.

The result of the votes showed that Sheikh Alh. Essa Darboe had the highest votes, 89, and Sheikh Muhammed Lamin Kanteha had 11 votes while Sheikh Cherno Darboe recorded 5 votes.

It was reported that 105 delegates comprising 15 Imams from each administrative region across the country voted during the election.
