Kabul Attack: US loses 12 soldiers
Not less than 12 US soldiers have died in the Kabul airport attack
According to the head of the US Central Command, 15 people were also injured in the attack at Kabul’s Airport on Thursday August 26, 2021.
“More than 60 Afghans are dead and at least 140 wounded,” Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health reported.
There were at least two explosions near a gate at the Kabul airport. They came as the US and other countries race to evacuate people ahead of President Biden’s Aug. 31 withdrawal deadline.
Before Thursday, the last American troops killed in Afghanistan were in February 2020.
A Pentagon official who addressed journalists in Washington on Thursday said the attackers are believed to be linked to ISIS-K, Islamic State Khorasan, a splinter group of disaffected Pakistani Taliban created six years ago.
The Taliban had earlier condemned the attack, saying it occurred in an area of the airport manned by U.S. soldiers.
The Kabul airport has been under the global spotlight since thousands of people rushed there last week in a bid to leave the country after the Taliban took over the government.
