Japan, UN-Habitat to develop residential area in Mosul
In a collaborative effort to support individuals returning to Mosul, one of the most conflict-affected regions, the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) and the Japanese government are set to embark on a new project. Aimed at fostering peacebuilding initiatives and establishing enduring solutions in northern Iraq, this initiative is aligned with the city’s master plan, specifically targeting the designated residential area for returnees.
The focal point of the project is the creation of social housing units equipped with essential public infrastructure, prioritizing the needs of returnees in Mosul. UN-Habitat envisions not only providing shelter but also enhancing socioeconomic stability by incorporating vocational training for the beneficiaries. Additionally, a comprehensive public outreach campaign on climate change adaptation will be launched, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups, including women and children.
According to a statement released by UN-Habitat, the project’s activities are meticulously coordinated with the authorities of Mosul and the Nineveh governorate, with the ambitious goal of completing all initiatives by January 2025. This timeline underscores the urgency and commitment to rebuilding the affected region promptly.
Building on the success and lessons learned from the Bab Sinjar Housing Complex, inaugurated in February 2023, the upcoming project aims to replicate and expand upon the positive outcomes achieved. The Bab Sinjar Housing Complex, consisting of nine buildings totaling 324 apartments, was entirely constructed by UN-Habitat and financed by the Japanese government. This housing complex played a pivotal role in assisting 2,300 returnees, earning recognition from the Iraqi government and humanitarian organizations as an exemplary model for providing long-term solutions to displaced populations.
The forthcoming project signifies a continuation of the collaborative efforts between UN-Habitat and the Japanese government, exemplifying their commitment to alleviating the challenges faced by conflict-affected populations and contributing to the sustainable reconstruction of Mosul.
