Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has made a bold statement to Christians on Friday, suggesting that if they vote for him in the upcoming election, they won’t need to vote again. “In four years, you don’t have to vote again. We’ll have it fixed so good, you’re not gonna have to vote,” Trump declared.

Speaking at an event organized by the conservative group Turning Point Action in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump encouraged Christians to vote in November, assuring them that this would be their last necessary participation. “Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians,” Trump said.

The implications of Trump’s remarks are unclear, especially in the context of accusations from his Democratic opponents that he poses a threat to democracy. These accusations are rooted in his efforts to overturn his 2020 defeat to President Joe Biden, culminating in the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, did not directly address the meaning behind Trump’s comments. Instead, Cheung emphasized that Trump “was talking about uniting this country” and attributed the “divisive political environment” to a recent assassination attempt on Trump. Investigators have not yet provided a motive for the 20-year-old gunman’s actions.

In a December interview with Fox News, Trump stated that if he won the November 5 election, he would act as a dictator, but only on “day one” to close the southern border with Mexico and expand oil drilling. Though Trump later claimed the remark was a joke, Democrats have highlighted it as evidence of his authoritarian tendencies.

Should Trump win a second term, he can only serve four more years as U.S. presidents are constitutionally limited to two terms, whether consecutive or not. In May, Trump joked about serving more than two terms while speaking at a National Rifle Association gathering, referencing Franklin D. Roosevelt, the only president to serve more than two terms before the two-term limit was established.
