Switzerland reopens embassy in Baghdad after being closed since 1991
Switzerland has officially reopened its embassy in Baghdad, a significant move that comes after the diplomatic mission was shuttered in 1991 during the Gulf War. This reopening marks the end of a 33-year absence in the Iraqi capital and signals Switzerland’s confidence in Iraq’s evolving security landscape.

According to Swiss authorities, the decision to reestablish a presence in Baghdad is driven by Iraq’s improving security situation, which has paved the way for renewed economic growth. The Swiss government noted that Iraq is playing a pivotal role in regional diplomacy, acting as a mediator to advance peace and security.
“After years of turmoil, Iraq is entering a new phase, and we believe it is crucial to be present to support this positive momentum,” said a Swiss government spokesperson.
Switzerland joins over 50 nations, including the European Union and 18 other European countries, that currently maintain embassies in Baghdad, underscoring the growing international confidence in Iraq’s stability and future prospects.
