US imposes new sanctions on RT over alleged covert operations

The United States has levied fresh sanctions against Russia’s state-run media outlet RT, accusing it of engaging in covert intelligence activities and military procurement.
The US State Department announced on Friday that RT, formerly known as Russia Today, has evolved from a media outlet into an entity involved in “cyber capabilities” and global influence operations.
The sanctions highlight allegations that RT has used online crowdfunding platforms to support the Russian military with sniper rifles, body armor, drones, and other equipment, which is reportedly being used in the conflict in Ukraine. The State Department’s statement noted, “RT is engaged in information operations, covert influence, and military procurement targeting countries across Europe, Africa, and both Americas.”
The move adds to the growing list of sanctions imposed by the Biden administration, which has been critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin and has responded to Russia’s actions in Ukraine with a series of punitive measures. Last week, the US Justice Department charged two RT employees for their alleged roles in a Moscow-directed influence operation aimed at the upcoming US elections.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized RT for attempting to mask its covert activities, stating, “Our most powerful antidote to Russia’s lies is the truth.” He emphasized that the sanctions aim to expose and counter the Kremlin’s hidden operations.
RT has reportedly been creating deceptive websites to spread propaganda and has expanded its cyber-operations with new units linked to Russian intelligence. In response, RT mocked the accusations, with a representative telling CNN, “We’ve been broadcasting straight out of the KGB headquarters all this time.” Russia’s embassy in Washington did not immediately comment on the sanctions.
