Liz Cheney sounds alarm on GOP control amid election security fears

Former Representative Liz Cheney issued a stark warning on Sunday, expressing deep concern over the prospect of Republicans controlling Congress next year, citing potential threats to election integrity.

Former Representative Liz Cheney issued a stark warning on Sunday, expressing deep concern over the prospect of Republicans controlling Congress next year, citing potential threats to election integrity.

Speaking on NBC’s Meet The Press,Cheney, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, said she has little faith in House Speaker Mike Johnson and his ability to uphold constitutional duties, pointing to his actions during the 2020 election.

“I do not have faith that Mike Johnson will fulfill his constitutional obligations… He knew and he knew with specificity that claims of fraud that Donald Trump was making…were false,” Cheney said. She emphasized the risk of a rigged narrative re-emerging if Trump loses in 2024, urging that Republicans “not be a majority in the House come January 2025.”

Her remarks come amid growing tensions over election security, fueled by Trump’s persistent false claims of election fraud. Cheney, who played a key role in investigating the January 6 Capitol riot, has increasingly distanced herself from her party’s extreme factions, even endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

While Speaker Johnson has reassured the public that he will certify the 2024 election results if they are “free and fair,” Cheney’s comments underscore the ongoing fracture within the GOP over election legitimacy and democratic norms.
