Mayor Eric Adams led a flag-raising ceremony at Bowling Green today, marking three years of honoring the vibrant Kazakh community in NYC New York City. The event, attended by city officials and community leaders, celebrated the enduring spirit of resilience and unity that defines both Kazakhstan and its diaspora in the United States.
Commissioner Ed Mermelstein, from the Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, opened the ceremony by sharing a personal connection to Kazakhstan. “In the 1940s, Kazakhstan was a country that provided refuge to my father and his family during World War II. And that country provided refuge to so many from the Soviet Union during a very, very difficult time,” he said. His remarks set a poignant tone for the ceremony, emphasizing New York’s long-standing role as a sanctuary for those seeking safety.
Mayor Adams took to the podium, expressing gratitude for the Kazakh community’s contributions to the city. “It’s a beautiful story that the commissioner talked about, and it just goes to show us that although we celebrate our independence, we are dependent on each other,” he stated. He underscored the significance of the flag-raising event, saying, “When we do these flag raisings here at the foundation of our economic strength, a place we call Bowling Green, it’s an opportunity for all of our countries to know that you are not forgotten. In fact, you are part of the fabric of this great city.”

Highlighting the values shared between New York City and Kazakhstan, Mayor Adams continued, “You believe in family, you believe in faith, you believe in public safety, you believe in business, and that is why we want to celebrate you and lift your flag and say happy independence.” He emphasized the importance of cultural independence while advocating for mutual support among diverse communities: “Let’s continue to be independent as our individual cultures and countries, but let’s be dependent on each other in how we continue to make this the city where we all can reach the full potential of our dreams, and that’s the American Dream.”
The ceremony culminated with the raising of the Kazakh flag, symbolizing the unity and diversity that enrich New York City’s cultural landscape. As the flag ascended, attendees celebrated not only Kazakhstan’s independence but also the shared values that strengthen the bonds among all communities within the city.
