Qatar has reiterated its strong commitment to nuclear disarmament and the importance of adhering to international treaties aimed at eliminating weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).

Speaking at the First Committee of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, Second Secretary of Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the UN, called on all nations to join efforts to promote global peace and security.

In his statement, Al Thani emphasized, “We hope that all countries around the globe join these agreements, to contribute to achieving international peace and security and preserving future generations and ecosystems from the danger of proliferation of these weapons.” He highlighted Qatar’s ongoing efforts to align its national legislation with its international obligations regarding WMDs.

Al Thani also noted Qatar’s collaboration with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), underscoring the country’s financial support aimed at enhancing the role of artificial intelligence in the OPCW’s operations. This initiative, he stated, is intended to improve the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

To further its commitment, the National Committee for Prohibition of Weapons (NCPW) in Qatar organizes workshops aimed at educating university students about the dangers of WMDs. These sessions cover topics including biological and chemical weapons conventions, as well as treaties related to nuclear weapons.

Highlighting the need for peaceful conflict resolution, Al Thani referenced UN Security Council Resolution 1540 from 2004, which encourages states to foster dialogue and cooperation in non-proliferation efforts. He stressed that the proliferation of WMDs poses a significant threat to international peace and security.

“The proliferation and use of weapons of mass destruction and their horrific effects on humanity require the international community to work together to prevent the possession of these deadly weapons,” Al Thani asserted. He urged all nations to adhere strictly to international treaties aimed at prohibiting the use of WMDs under any circumstances, reinforcing Qatar’s dedication to disarmament and global security.
