Former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed a surprisingly optimistic outlook for Lebanon’s future during a recent interview with Lebanese television station MTV, despite the ongoing war waged by Israel.
Speaking at a large Arab community gathering, Trump remarked, “despite all the challenges Lebanon is facing, things will turn out very well, and the Lebanese people will be happy in the end.”
On the campaign trail, Trump discussed various topics, including immigration and the implications of the Israeli conflict, asserting that if re-elected, he would work towards peace in the Middle East. When asked about his engagement with Arab voters and their concerns regarding U.S. foreign policy, he claimed, “tremendous progress has been made.”
Addressing the root causes of tensions in Lebanon and the broader region, Trump was vague, stating, “we have many people who are working on peace and many people that aren’t… The ones that aren’t are the ones responsible and I think they’re paying a big price.”
Promising to “move the process along,” he emphasized the need for parties to engage directly to achieve a ceasefire, without detailing specific actions he would take. Trump maintained that his administration would foster collaboration with Lebanese Americans, although he remained non-committal on strategies regarding Iran, stating he would make decisions once in office.
In September, Trump labeled Israel’s actions in Lebanon as “unacceptable,” urging for an end to hostilities. However, his recent interactions suggest a warming relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Following their July meeting in Florida, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to peace in the Middle East and combating anti-Semitism on U.S. college campuses.
Trump’s presidency from 2017 to 2021 was marked by significant pro-Israel policies, including the relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and the recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli territory, as well as a reduction in aid to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. As he campaigns for a return to the White House, his remarks signal a continued focus on Middle Eastern dynamics amid complex geopolitical tensions.
