In response to Donald Trump’s election as the 47th President of the United States, immigrant advocates in New York are pledging to fight his deportation agenda and defend the rights of immigrant communities.
Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), made a defiant statement, vowing that Trump will not succeed in dismantling the fabric of New York’s immigrant communities.
“Trump will not defeat us. New York would not be the same without the immigrants who have built and rebuilt our culture and economy for generations,” Awawdeh declared. “We stopped him before and we will stop him again. Together, we will fight the fascist President-elect and his racist deportation agenda every step of the way.”
Awawdeh’s comments reflect the coalition’s resolve to protect immigrant families from potential mass deportations and to ensure that communities continue to live in safety and dignity. “We must stand together to protect our immigrant neighbors, and to build a just and inclusive future for all New Yorkers,” Awawdeh said, emphasizing solidarity and resistance against Trump’s policies.
The NYIC, which represents over 200 immigrant and refugee rights organizations, has long been a key advocate for immigrant rights in New York. Since its founding in 1987, the coalition has served as a powerful voice for policy change, championing the rights of immigrant communities and ensuring they receive access to vital services and protections.
As Trump prepares to take office, the NYIC is ready to mobilize its vast network of grassroots and advocacy groups to continue defending the rights of one of the nation’s most diverse and vital populations.
