Iran allegedly seeks unofficial dialogue with Elon Musk amid US tensions

Iran’s U.N. Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani allegedly met with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk in New York this week, in what a U.S. official described as an attempt to ease relations with the incoming Trump administration.

Iran’s U.N. Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani allegedly met with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk in New York this week, in what a U.S. official described as an attempt to ease relations with the incoming Trump administration.

The meeting, reportedly sought by the Iranian delegation, addressed Iran’s nuclear ambitions, its support for anti-Israel groups, and the possibility of improved U.S.-Iran ties.

According to the U.S. official briefed by a foreign counterpart, the discussion was “wide-ranging but inconclusive,” with no immediate decisions reached. The meeting was said to have taken place outside the Iranian mission to the U.N., though Iran’s Foreign Ministry vehemently denied its occurrence.

“We have not engaged in such talks with Mr. Elon Musk or any representative of the Trump administration,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told IRNA. “These reports are speculative and designed to distract from Iran’s legitimate diplomatic efforts.”

The Trump transition team has neither confirmed nor denied the meeting but reiterated its commitment to a strong foreign policy stance. “The American people re-elected President Trump because they trust him to lead our country and restore peace through strength,” said Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt. “When he returns to the White House, he will take decisive action to secure America’s interests.”

The alleged meeting comes amid heightened tensions, with Iran signaling cautious openness to diplomacy under its new reformist president. However, U.S. intelligence officials have noted continued Iranian opposition to Trump’s leadership, citing his withdrawal from the nuclear deal, reimposed sanctions, and the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been outspoken in his disdain for Trump, but official statements maintain a commitment to “pursue Martyr Soleimani’s assassination through legal and judicial avenues,” rather than retaliatory violence.

In contrast, Musk’s involvement as a perceived mediator has raised eyebrows. Known for his unorthodox forays into geopolitics, Musk has yet to comment publicly on the reports. However, the U.S. official claimed Musk’s presence was sought due to his proximity to Trump and his ability to influence key figures in the administration.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Iran assured the Biden administration it would not attempt to harm Trump, following warnings such actions would be considered acts of war. Iran’s U.N. mission declined to address specifics but stated, “The Islamic Republic remains committed to pursuing diplomacy while adhering fully to the principles of international law.”

Observers remain skeptical about the alleged meeting’s impact. “If true, this would be a highly unconventional approach by Iran, but it’s indicative of the stakes,” said one Middle East analyst. “Engaging Musk suggests Tehran is exploring all possible avenues to de-escalate with the U.S.”

For now, the mystery surrounding the meeting adds another layer of intrigue to the ever-evolving U.S.-Iran relationship as both nations navigate an uncertain political landscape.
