Mayor Eric Adams has announced that City Hall and several municipal buildings will be lit blue, pink, and white tonight in recognition of Transgender Day of Remembrance.

This global observance commemorates transgender individuals lost to anti-transgender violence, sending a clear message that New York City stands as a beacon of safety and inclusivity.

“Transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary people show our city what it means to be strong, courageous, and brave every day, and today we remember all those who lost their lives in senseless acts of anti-transgender violence,” said Mayor Adams. “The lighting of these municipal buildings sends a powerful message that New York City will remain a safe haven for the entire LGBTQ+ community, and particularly for transgender individuals seeking to live their best and safest lives.”

Municipal landmarks joining City Hall in the tribute include Brooklyn Borough Hall, the David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building, Queens Borough Hall, and Staten Island Borough Hall.

Fred Kreizman, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit, emphasized the significance of the gesture: “Far too many transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary individuals have been lost to hate and violence. To honor their memory and stand against anti-transgender bigotry, we light up the city as a symbol of resilience and hope.”

This initiative builds on Mayor Adams’ history of advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. Notable actions include the introduction of the first LGBTQ+ inclusive St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Staten Island, a $6.7 million investment in LGBTQ+ social services, and an executive order safeguarding gender-affirming health care across the five boroughs.

By lighting the skyline in the colors of the transgender flag, New York City reaffirms its commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all.
