China has sharply criticized the latest round of U.S. tariffs, denouncing them as acts of “economic bullying” and urging the international community to resist what it called Washington’s growing protectionist stance.

Responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent move to impose an additional 34% tariff on Chinese goods — bringing the total levies on Chinese imports this year to 54% — Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on Monday condemned the tariffs as a self-serving strategy cloaked in the language of fairness.

“The tariffs are typical unilateralism and protectionism, and economic bullying,” Lin said at a regular press briefing. “U.S. tariffs in the name of reciprocity only serve its own interest at the expense of other countries.”

Lin’s remarks come as tensions rise over the Trump administration’s sweeping trade measures, which now include a flat 10% tariff on all imports from several U.S. trade partners. China has already announced a set of countermeasures in response.

“Threats and pressure are not the right way to deal with China,” Lin emphasized, signaling Beijing’s disapproval of Washington’s hardline tactics while stopping short of confirming whether fresh negotiations with the U.S. are on the table.

He further warned that the U.S. tariff regime disproportionately harms the Global South and risks deepening global inequality. “The abuse of tariffs by the United States is tantamount to depriving countries, especially those in the Global South, of their right to development,” Lin said, citing a growing divide between rich and poor nations.

Calling for a return to “genuine multilateralism,” Lin urged countries to unite in defense of the rules-based international trading system anchored in United Nations and World Trade Organization principles.

“All countries should uphold consultation, joint construction and sharing,” he said, urging a collective stand against unilateralism and protectionism.

The latest escalation adds to mounting global concern over the weaponization of trade policy, with many nations now caught in the crossfire of a U.S.-China economic standoff that shows no signs of abating.
