Outgoing New York City Mayor Eric Adams has officially conceded defeat and congratulated Zohran Mamdani, the city’s mayor-elect, following the conclusion of Tuesday’s highly contested election.

In a televised address to New Yorkers, Adams acknowledged the results and emphasized the importance of a united transition for the good of the city.

“Good evening, New Yorkers. The polls have closed and the decision is final. And I want to say congratulations to Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani,” Adams said. “A hard-fought battle, and it’s imperative that our city continues to move forward.”

Adams also announced that his administration would begin preparing detailed transition materials to assist Mamdani and his incoming team.

“My team is going to put together transition documents and information to allow you to assemble your team and get prepared to govern the city,” he stated. “One of the most difficult jobs, but truly the greatest job on the globe — being the mayor of the city of New York.”

Speaking to communities that voted for other candidates, Adams called for calm, inclusion, and faith in democratic institutions.

“To all those communities who voted for someone else, we understand your concerns, we understand your fears, we understand the anxiety that you are feeling. But this is our democracy,” he said. “And as our democracy, we will move together to ensure this city is a city that hears the voices of everyone.”

Adams, who has served as mayor since 2022, closed his remarks by pledging his ongoing support for public safety and unity in the city.

“I can promise you, as your former mayor and as a former member of the New York City Police Department, I will be committed to ensure your safety and your acceptance in the city that we all love,” he concluded.
