South Bronx Celebrates Completion of $1.7 Billion Hunts Point Access Project

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson has hailed the completion of the $1.7 billion Hunts Point Access Improvement Project as a major victory for the South Bronx.
Governor Kathy Hochul joined local leaders to mark the milestone, which is expected to transform mobility, health, and infrastructure in one of the city’s most impacted communities.
Describing the achievement, Gibson said, “A big win for the Bronx! We were proud to join Governor Hochul to announce the completion of the $1.7 billion Hunts Point Access Improvement Project, marking a major milestone for health, mobility, and infrastructure in the South Bronx.”
The project creates a direct connection to the Hunts Point Terminal Market, removing thousands of trucks from residential streets each day and reducing congestion, noise, and air pollution in neighborhoods with long-standing asthma challenges. It also introduces new shared-use paths, safer pedestrian crossings, expanded access to the Bronx River waterfront, and redesigned streets intended to reconnect communities historically divided by major roadways.
Gibson noted that the improvements align with broader investments underway in Hunts Point, including new affordable housing projects, the “Blue Highway” marine freight initiative, a future EV charging hub focused on freight vehicles, and modernization of the Hunts Point Markets.
She said the combined efforts will deliver “cleaner air, safer streets, and stronger economic opportunity for the South Bronx.”
