Julie Menin was, today, elected Speaker of the New York City Council, becoming the first Jewish person to hold the powerful legislative post, a milestone widely welcomed by civic and community leaders across the city.

In a statement released following the vote, Mark Treyger, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC-NY), praised Menin’s election as both historic and timely. Treyger described the new speaker as a trusted partner and a steadfast advocate for Jewish New Yorkers, particularly at a moment when concerns over antisemitism continue to rise nationwide.

Menin, who represents Manhattan’s District 5, is the daughter and granddaughter of Holocaust survivors—an aspect of her background that community leaders say adds profound significance to her leadership. According to Treyger, her personal history informs her strong commitment to combating hate while advancing policies that serve all New Yorkers.

“Speaker Menin continues to be a champion for Jewish New Yorkers at a critical time for our communities,” Treyger said, adding that JCRC-NY is grateful for her leadership and her continued efforts to confront antisemitism while strengthening civic unity across the city.

Treyger also noted that it was a privilege for JCRC-NY representatives to attend the Council session marking Menin’s election and expressed optimism about continued collaboration during her tenure. “We look forward to working with Speaker Menin as she begins her historic leadership of the City Council,” he said.

Menin’s election ushers in a new chapter for the City Council, as she takes the gavel at a time when New York faces pressing challenges ranging from public safety and affordability to civil rights and community cohesion
