The wife of detained journalist, Bilal Abdul Kareem, has raised concerns over his continued detention, describing the situation as unjust and emotionally devastating for their family.

In a statement shared publicly, Umm Bilal disclosed that she and three other wives were recently granted a brief visit to see him, marking the first physical contact in weeks. However, she noted that their children were denied access, a development she described as both heartbreaking and troubling.

“Yesterday was a beautiful day; we were able to visit Bilal… but it was also very sad that the children were not allowed,” she said, adding that the visit lasted only about 30 minutes.

According to her, officials informed them that Kareem’s case remains under investigation and that he is expected to appear before an investigating judge soon. However, she expressed frustration that three months have passed without a formal ruling or significant progress.

She revealed that the journalist had only been questioned once, approximately two months ago, with no further updates since then.

“We absolutely don’t understand this… we are now waiting for answers as a family and for Bilal’s return,” she said, calling for prayers and support while describing the situation as “dhulm” (injustice).

Umm Bilal also highlighted the emotional toll on their children, who she said are “suffering greatly” due to their inability to see their father.

She further used the opportunity to advocate for the rights of detainees in Syria, calling for adherence to fundamental legal principles, including the prohibition of torture, an end to indefinite detention, and timely access to judicial processes.

Background: Who is Bilal Abdul Kareem?

Bilal Abdul Kareem is an American-born journalist and media figure known for his extensive reporting from conflict zones, particularly in Syria. He has spent years covering the Syrian civil war, often focusing on humanitarian issues, civilian experiences, and the conditions of detainees.

Kareem is also associated with advocacy efforts around prisoners’ rights, including initiatives such as the “Prisoners Covenant,” which promotes humane treatment and legal protections for detainees regardless of their status.

Over the years, his work has drawn both recognition and controversy due to the complex and sensitive nature of reporting in conflict areas. His detention has since sparked concern among supporters and rights advocates, who continue to call for due process and transparency in his case.
