Two officers shot in Queens confrontation

In a harrowing confrontation in Queens, two plainclothes officers from the public safety unit in the 115th precinct were shot while attempting to apprehend a man on a motorized scooter. The incident unfolded at the intersection of 89th St. and 23rd Ave. in Elmhurst, shattering the stillness of the early morning hours at precisely 1:41 AM.

According to initial reports, the officers initiated a routine stop of the individual operating the motorized scooter. However, as they attempted to halt the scooter, the rider swiftly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, prompting the officers to give chase.

The situation escalated rapidly when the suspect, in a brazen act, produced a firearm and opened fire at the pursuing officers. In the exchange of gunfire that ensued, one officer sustained a gunshot wound to the back, while the other received a graze wound to the stomach. The severity of their injuries remains undisclosed at this time.

In response to the imminent threat, at least one of the officers discharged their weapon, striking the assailant, identified as a 19-year-old male, in the leg. Following the altercation, emergency services rushed to the scene, swiftly transporting both injured officers to Elmhurst General Hospital for urgent medical attention. Simultaneously, the perpetrator was transported to Booth Memorial Hospital to receive treatment for his gunshot wound.
